Diabetes has become a global problem. We will talk about type 2, which accounts for about 90% of all diabetes.

Experts claim, that the risk of type 2 diabetes can be reduced or managed. A little knowledge of this terrible disease may prove helpful to you.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that causes a person to have too much sugar in the blood. The disease upsets the normal process of transferring sugar from the bloodstream into cells that need it for energy.

The result?

  • Damage to vital organs
  • Impairment of blood circulation leading to toe or foot amputation
  • Blindness
  • Kidney disease.
  • Heart attacks or stroke.

Watching your weight is so important to reducing the risk of diabetes.  Many experts feel that too much fat around the stomach area may be a contributing factor to diabetes.  Internal fat around the pancreas and liver will also disrupt the body’s regulation of blood sugar.

What can you do to reduce your risk?

One. If you are in a high risk group – get yourself tested!

Have you heard of prediabetes?  It’s a condition in which blood sugar is moderately higher than normal—often precedes type 2 diabetes.

Both conditions are not good for health, but there is a difference: Some prediabetics have been able to bring their blood sugar back to normal levels. Prediabetes may have no obvious symptoms. Hence, this condition may go unnoticed.

A blood test can tell you if you do.

Two. Choose food which will help you.

Eat smaller portions than you normally would.  This may initially be difficult but after a few weeks your stomach will accept this new trend.

Instead of high sugar fruit juices and carbonated (fizzy) beverages, drink water, tea, or coffee.

Eat whole-grain bread, rice, and pasta (in moderation), rather than refined foods e.g sliced white bread

Eat leaner meats, fish, nuts, and beans.

Three. Exercise

It will lower your blood sugar and help you maintain a healthy weight.

You don’t have to stop watching t.v all together.  Just swap some t.v time for exercise.  Even if it’s a fast twenty-minute walk every day before or after work.

You cannot change your genes, but you can change your lifestyle. Doing what we can to improve our health is worth the effort.
